A Eulogy For Those Still Here
Counterparts
Counterparts is no doubt good at what they do. They put the 'melodic' in melodic hardcore with soaring, hope-filled lead guitar lines, and there's a great deal of mathy technicality that makes their work very impressive, purely from a performance perspective. That being said though, I can say that aside from a few songs here and there across the band's fifteen year career, I've never been a fan of their style. I think what it mostly comes down to is how dense their music is. Their songs are just a whirlwind of ideas that seemingly have no direction forward and also never reflect back on where they came from. For me, that makes their music, this new album included, extremely hard for me to get into. Of course, music like this begs to be heard numerous times before you can even start to digest it, but with A Eulogy For Those Still Here, there's no stylistic shift, no face bending riff that stops me in my tracks, nothing that really compels me to give this record a second thought; and I think that's valid. It's heavy, it's punchy, and I certainly won't make a fuss if it were to come on. However, I'm not really hearing anything to get excited over.
