Sigur R贸s frontman J贸nsi and his partner Alex Somers created some truly immersive ambient and drone music back in 2009. Using lushly treated acoustic instrumentation, warped pianos, a string quartet, field recordings, and a choir, the duo built a sonic palette that was soothing right to the very core. Boy 1904 is perhaps the most enveloping piece featured on the record. It is difficult to tell how the sounds are created, but it sounds old and distant. The child choir that fades in soars over this backdrop and makes me want to close my eyes, releasing all the tension I'm carrying inside. This is what makes Riceboy Sleeps special. Unlike many other ambient works, this record doesn't merely operate in the background, but instead draws you into its serene world.
