Plosivs
PLOSIVS is the new supergroup consisting of the prolific and underground rock legends Rob Crow (Pinback), John Reis (Drive Like Jehu), and Atom Willard (Against Me). Together as PLOSIVS, the group make very straightforward, driving alternative rock. The guitars mash away at jangly chords and the tone is on the muddier side. The drums are just pounding away, not trying to steal the show, but just keeping that steady back beat going. And then we have Rob Crow's very recognizable voice of course.
On paper, it sounds like this would be an exciting rock record, but in execution, there's just nothing here to really get all worked up over. On the melodic end, it's quite bland. The tempos, the sounds, and the style is recycled song after song without any sort of deviation. Even though I can sort of get behind the first third of the record, by the time I get to the end, I'm terribly bored. I like the chord progression on Thrown Clear, I think the urgency gets a little pumped up on See You Suffer, and Pray For Summer sticks out purely by the virtue of incorporating a nice little synth sound. Although, I would have taken any hint of variation at that point of the record. Other than that, the rest of this was super sleepy and forgettable. Pretty unbecoming of the great names attached to this project. Oh well.
