Eternal Blue

Spiritbox

I didn't mind last year's Eternal Blue, but I remember wishing that something about their music stood out a little more; made them a little more of a unique experience in the alt-metal world. Well, we have this new EP from Spiritbox and I am wishing now, even more so, that to be the case. The three songs that make up this EP don't have anything that I would say is offensive, but it is terribly bland. We've got dime-a-dozen drum and guitar sounds that are devoid of any interesting riffs or rhythms. The production and dynamics are quite flat, making this one of the least thrilling metal experiences I've had this year. Even Courtney's vocals, which I praised heavily the last time I talked about Spiritbox, felt stuck for a good chunk of time in this angelic malaise. Last year, this delivery injected a little mystery and intrigue into their music, although, in this case it feels a tad lazy and uninspired. I know Spiritbox is a work horse, actively getting new music out there at every opportunity they can. However, I can't help but feel like these are Eternal Blue throwaways. Maybe it's good enough to tide over the fans, but I can't say the same for myself.
