Bad Songs Forever

Deaf Club

How many bands is Justin Pearson in? No one works harder in the realm of grind, mathcore, and other zany off shoots of hardcore punk. Deaf Club, his latest project it seems, should come as no surprise for those familiar with Justin Pearson's work or have an affinity for any of the acts on the Three One G label. However, just because nothing here comes as a surprise doesn't necessarily mean it is any less thrilling, heavy, and headache inducing (in the best way). The three original tracks on this EP are filled with chaotic blast beats, dizzying panic chords and Pearson's signature distorted snarl. But Does It Fart? is without a doubt one of my favourite grindcore tracks of the year thanks to the vocal support in the chorus. Gruff and guttural hollers clash with harsh false chord shrieks to create a moment that is truly spine tingling. Joining these three tracks is also a cover of Pixies' Broken Face, a truly warped take with stuttering and feedbacked guitars. The only element that grounds it to the original is the straightforward drum beat. It's a pretty cool, Joey Santiago-approved, take on an already esoteric tune. Bad Songs Forever is a great little EP and further adds proof that whenever Justin Pearson is involved, you can count on quality math and grindcore goodness.
